Before I get down with it, let me call attention to the fact that I haven’t seen any promotional artwork for the single. I think in this era of online promotion and marketing, there should’ve been one. Anyways it’s never too late.
The opening bar of the first verse gives so much promise only to be followed by sub-par bars, I think the only thing connecting the bars together is the rhyming. The second verse sounds a lot better and maybe should’ve come first. One innovative thing is the structuring of the verses and hooks, the 12 bar verses and 12 bar hooks are a break from the norm of 16 bar verses and 8-bar hooks.
Personally, the highlight of the record is the line that makes up the final four bars of the hook “…Sama boppa legne buga si kow plaat…” (they want my head on a platter). Quite rhythmic and catchy and it works so well with the instrumental. However, I doubt if the translation carries the same weight as its English equivalent. Maybe Vypa should’ve just rapped the line in English. Sometimes translations don’t work so well.
The instrumental sounds really impressive but I think it is weighed down by the inclusion of the marimba which makes it sound a little too generic for me. Somehow I guess it was added to give the beat a local effect but it didn’t gel as properly as it should have. There are various other local elements that could’ve been infused and still sound as good or even better.
Forgive me for bringing this up but is the line “..duma fi dem beh nek(a) di baaye..” subliminally aimed at Gee’s sudden retirement? Lol. Well, you be the judge.
